Carter's paintings combine figuration and abstraction, layering portraits of family members and friends with maps, textile patterns, and architectural fragments drawn from the different cultures that have shaped her life. The resulting images are dense and visually complex, rewarding extended looking with new details and connections.
Accompanying the paintings is a three-channel video installation featuring interviews with members of the diasporic communities in Berlin, each reflecting on the spaces — physical and psychological — where they feel most at home. The videos are projected onto translucent screens suspended in the gallery, allowing the images to overlap and bleed into each other.
The project emerged from Carter's own experience of moving to Berlin and finding herself negotiating yet another cultural context. Rather than treating displacement as a problem to be solved, her work frames it as a fundamentally creative condition — one that generates new forms of identity and belonging.
The exhibition was praised for its emotional depth and visual sophistication, with critics noting Carter's ability to address complex political themes through deeply personal storytelling.
